No Spend July.
It's the 30th of July, where has that month gone ?. I love having a day job that allows me to take all school holidays off. I just wish I knew a way to make the time go a little slower. At the start of the month I was watching Instagram stories, which I love, when Rachael from @ seth.style was talking about having a no spend July. I have been watching others I follow talk about doing no spend months and even whole years and I have been curious about how they would work. I have followed Rachael for a few years and I love her Instagram so I sent her a message and said I would try a no spend July with her.
Now when I had said it I did think it would not be possible because I spend a lot a month on little things. These little things all add up I see now to a huge amount each month. So I made an agreement with myself that for the month of July the only money I would spend was on food and essentials. These essentials were things fuel for the car, injections and stuff for the new pup that arrived, some stuff for the house and a blanket for one horse who has sweet itch. I was good all month other than that only buying food. I didn't buy any clothes, makeup, books, stationary or magazines. I did cave last week and bought some art supplies but that is all.
This was a huge achievement for me because I will admit money to be honest burns a whole in my pocket. So as I sat down this morning to see just how well I had done I was so shocked at just what waste of money I still had !. I am wasting a worrying amount of money on food as I classed it. In this waste I am not talking about the food you need every week I am talking about all the stuff I don't need. The take away coffees, the 5.00 or 10.00 euro here and there on sweets/ drinks/crap food. It's just shocking when I see it all written down. I waste so much still even with a no spend month.
So there needs to be some huge changes and I need to get a lot smarter with my spending. Even though all these extras were food I didn't need them. All the experts will tell you it takes between 21 and 66 days to change a habit and form a new one. With that in mind I am going to try and do a stricter NO SPEND August and see if I can sort out this spending. This will be a little harder to do as it's back to school month and also it's the RDS Dublin international horse show which I will have to buy tickets for. Other than that I am hoping this will be an even better no spend month.
If anyone else would like to join me you that would be great just send me a message on Twitter or Instagram.
I am off now to lock my purse and card away.
